i don't understand my Thai housemate.

he's very young, and looks young too. he's here because he wants to improve his English at a local private college. he's only going to be here for three months.

and i don't understand him.

he comes home during alternate hours and heads straight for his room, trailed by the clicking sound of his lock. whenever i bumped into him and try to create conversation, he smiles like a shy virgin and doesn't say anything. i'm lucky if he answers 'yes' or 'no', but i always get the confused/shy smile. i think sometimes he doesn't understand my questions, but i have a feeling he doesn't know what to say even if he did.

i have tried to get to know him and show him around. i brought him out to dinner, because he only eats in one place. i brought him to play basketball, and after the game he sits down and scrolls his smartphone. i gave him some music and movies, and he was extremely polite and thanked me, then i heard the familiar clicking sound of his lock.

i deplore the local private college for exploiting people like my housemate, who came here to learn a language, and until now i feel like i'm asking questions to the thin air whenever we 'talked'.

but i also think he's doing this to himself. he doesn't seem to initiate anything. most of the time i feel like i'm dragging a toddler to learn his alphabets. i tried explaining to him that he only has three months and that's enough to learn English, but he needs to put in effort outside of the classroom.

he nodded and smiled. then i heard the familiar clicking sound of his lock.
