6 reasons why Penangites are not 2020-ready (and a-holes)

1) Living on a leisure island where the state government is one of the best in the country and life is relatively crime-free, Penangites stroll at their own pace along public places. They hog the right lane on escalators, not because they’re actually a-holes, but nobody seems to be rushing in Penang malls. It does not matter, because during a hurry, difficult it is for one to distinguish between the good and bad guys.

2) Penangites are bad with elevators. No one waits for people to come out from the box, just like no one holds the doors open for the rest to exit. It creates a scene every time I see the ones on the outside huddling quickly when the elevator is nigh, only to scatter a little to make necessary room for people to pass through, and then scurry into the box asap.

3) Linked to 2. Penangites seem to think elevator doors will crush them into bits of oblivion if they do not move fast enough. When the doors occasionally closed onto somebody, a series of profanities or laser-sharp glares would be pointed at the culprit, which is ironic, because remember, no one holds the elevator doors open in Penang.

4) Penangites are supremely unconcerned about garbage and water. Both are poorly managed in its proud heritage area, but if even the residents only complain when asked, then the authorities couldn’t be bothered. If there’s anything Penang’s celebrity/rockstar Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng couldn’t do, it is to convince Penangites that garbage is pilling at an all-time high and taps may run dry in the near future. Unless, of course, it buys more water from neighbouring Kedah at a price agreeable to Alor Setar.

5) Spitting. Seriously?

6) Penang is an island to Penangites, and that’s it. No mainland folks could convince them otherwise. Besides, it’s awfully far and the mainland is rumoured to have only one reason worth crossing the Penang Bridge for: Butterworth tomyam mee. After slurping down the delicious noodles (they are quite delicious), it’s back to the island for the rest of our lives, honey. Until the next craving strikes.
