When Tun Dr. Mahathir set the Vision 2020 for Malaysia, no one expected things to be where they are now, unfolding like drama before our eyes, never failing to amaze and stun our senses.
Is Malaysia progressing or declining?
One of the most prominent feature of a failed state is the failure to practise the doctrine of separation of powers. In Malaysia, the Executive, namely Mr. PM, controls and influences what the other branches of the Government do. The heads of those branches are appointed, extended, and if the PM likes it, retired. He is the one calling the shots.
The Judiciary?
The Judiciary is the last resort for any individual who wants to go against the powerful State for various reasons. If the other branches are faulty, a clean,independent and upright Judiciary will safeguard the rights of the people and set things in order. Unfortunately, the Malaysian Judiciary is not viewed in that light, and they have solid reasons to justify. The infamous VK Lingam video clip is what set this public belief in motion, and the Government's deafening silence on this issue and ignoring the Commission's recommendations is equally disheartening and disgusting.
The way courts have been handling cases, from my point of view, have been rather disappointing and appeared to be biased. Though with assurances from many top ministers, the public are not yet satisfied with how things are done.
A sad case when most Malaysians do not push for what they deserved. Most are ignorant, or simply 'khiah-si', preferring to ensure that their rice bowl is intact. The recent case of Teoh showed us that lives are cheap, with no one and no system to protect us.
