Focus on this character for a minute: Severus Snape.

Among the legion of HP fans, many had formed their own brand of opinion of this unique yet sad character. 'Snape: Good or Bad' debate has been raging all over the Net.
But this is not what I am going to talk about.
Question: Who was Snape's second crush?
The answer is: Ay.
Snape's one and only love of his life was Lily Evans. Lily Evans ended up marrying James Potter and the rest of the story developed.
What happened?
Snape met Lily first, near Spinner's End. He spotted her using magic and identified her as one of his own. He also developed a kind of romantic interest in her at that point, despite her status of a Muggle-born. I won't say that his feelings were reciprocated, yet Lily was very attentive to Severus and they were close friends. Lily, of course, merely regarded Snape as a friend.
You know the rest of the story: Snape became obsessed with the Dark Arts, he yelled 'Mudblood' at Lily and their friendship ended. Snape tried his best to apologise, but all to no avail. In the end, James Potter dated Lily and she actually fell in love with him, and they had Harry.
Sometimes I think that this plot can be quite real in reality. And somehow, the latecomer always triumphs, while the poor friend suffered heartache.
I mean, this is so unfair. No doubt many factors orchestrated. Not going into them, but just feeling the pain of the loser.
Despite Snape's skill as a wizard and his love, he failed to win Lily's heart. He has been there for her, telling her about magic, being her friend, and yet...he lost it all out to James Potter, whom I doubt had any genuine friendship with Lily.

Suppose Snape did not lose his cool and let 'Mudblood' escaped his lips. Suppose he acted a little bit pathetic and let Lily defend him. Suppose he continues playing his role of Lily's friend.
Would the story be any different?

I sometimes think that Fate has decided it all. And no mortal, wizard or not, can change Its course.
It's yours if it's yours. So does she...
